Chasing the Flame

Social Action Campaign:  Build a movement for a more
engaged American public and a stronger American foreign
    policy

Greg Barker and Academy nominated writer/director Terry
    George

Sergio Vieira de Mello was an unsung international hero of the late twentieth and
early twenty-first century. His nearly 40 years in the United Nations brought him to
the center of the most significant humanitarian and geopolitical crises of our time
until he was killed in one of the first major suicide bombings in Iraq in 2003. Despite
his amazing story, few Americans know his name. In an unprecedented project,
however, three distinct media products – a bestselling book, an HBO documentary
and a major feature film – will tell the world Sergio’s story and provide an
unparalleled opportunity to bring his legacy to life.

The book, written by Pulitzer-prize winning author, professor and Obama
Administration official, Samantha Power, gives an incisive analysis of Sergio’s life.
Power reveals Vieira de Mello’s legacy of successful nation-building negotiations with
war-torn societies with significant life lessons for readers to incorporate into their
daily lives. Meanwhile, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Greg Barker, director of
Ghosts of Rwanda, and producer John Battsek, maker of the Oscar-winning
documentary One Day In September, have produced a ground-breaking feature-
documentary film that will tell the extraordinary story of Vieira de Mello’s life and
principles through the day those principles came under attack as never before:
August 19th, 2003 in Baghdad, when the UN headquarters was hit by a car bomb,
and Vieira de Mello’s life hung in the balance. Featuring unforgettable interviews and
top-level access to an extraordinary range of characters, the film premiered earlier
this year at the Sundance Film Festival and will follow with heavily promoted
television premieres on both the BBC and HBO.  Academy nominated writer/director
Terry George of Hotel Rwanda is in the development stages of a biographical motion
picture on Vieira de Mello that is anticipated to be released in 2010.

This groundbreaking trilogy of mediums provides an ideal platform for a social action
campaign that will not only reach a wide variety of audiences, but will also be the
common thread that brings the book, documentary and feature film audiences
together.  This campaign has been designed around a three-pronged approach to
educate, connect and activate the public.  It will provide an opportunity for citizens
across the country to learn about foreign policy and new principles of diplomacy and
convene with others to debate and discuss the issues and become part of a
community of global citizens.  These activities are designed to “seed” the start of a
movement: a political constituency that will ultimately influence politicians to change
    U.S. foreign policy and practices.
